Tourism in Andalusia

Visiting Andalusia during The Fiesta of San Isidro is the guarantee of being rapt with wonder by the spanish traditions.

On the 15th of May each year the whole of Costa Tropical pueblos like Nerja, La Herradura and Almunecar celebrate their patron saint, San Isidro.

Legend has it that this poor agricultural worker was extremely generous and kind. So each year he is remembered by towns like Nerja, staging a 'Romeria' which is where a procession of people, horses, floats etc follow the oxen-driven figure of San Isidro.

La Costa Tropical : perfect place for holidays

In Nerja, the procession starts from the Balcon de Europa right up to the entrance to the caves. This takes a few hours with people lining the streets on the way to capture photos of the spectacular event. Nerja's people get dressed up in their finest traditional outfits (flamenco dresses and waistcoats for the men and boys) and many men are on horseback with ladies seated sidesaddle on the back.

Bars and restaurants sponsor the various floats in the procession which are often pulled by mules or donkeys, (keeping with the agricultural theme) although these days there seem to be a number of tractors included too. Each year the atmosphere is one of fun and laughter where everyone seems to be relaxed and people really let their hair down for a good celebration.

If you enjoy a good party don't forget that everything begins at the caves the night before with a big open air dance floor, music, drinking and plenty of dancing. This continues on the 15th too, once the figure of San Isidro has been transported to the caves. So get your gladrags on and join in with this fun filled, crazy Spanish fiesta - said to be the biggest party of the year !
